How do you use natural materials in your design work? Show your skills in the Only Natural International Student Design Competition, which is open for entries until June 30.

This competition is entering its third year as a global platform championing the use of natural materials in fashion, furniture, and interiors, challenging the systems that have normalized synthetic and short-lived design. Founded by six U.S. natural fiber trade bodies, it urges today’s emerging designers to place natural fibers at the center of their work—materials that are renewable, biodegradable, and durable.

Interiors are increasingly reliant on oil-derived synthetics, and 92 million tons of textiles are discarded every year, according to the UN Environmental Programme. Additionally, plastic-based foams, finishes, and composites still dominate specifications. The Only Natural International Student Design Competition aims to change the dialogue around what materials are specified by highlighting the attributes of natural materials.

How Do I Enter the Competition?

Create your most beautiful, durable product design made primarily from natural materials. Previous submissions have explored materials ranging from wool, hemp, leather, and wood, to jute, silk, cotton, bamboo, and algae-based biomaterials.

Interior entrants will enter the Home category, which encompasses both furniture and interiors. You can submit one piece of furniture or an interior object, such as a chair, table, lamp, or textile piece. You’ll also upload a few deliverables to demonstrate your design:

  • A short project summary in English
  • A mood board and storytelling
  • Sketches, technical drawings or specifications
  • A full list of materials used
  • A video introducing you and your project (this is optional, but encouraged)

How Will My Entry Be Judged?

A panel of industry experts from the worlds of design, sustainability, and education will review all entries and assess them on individuality, conceptual clarity, cultural and commercial relevance, sustainability and material intelligence, and durability.

The process places equal weight on creativity and real-world viability, demonstrating that sustainability is also functional and marketable.

The panel will select category winners, overall winners, and the People’s Choice winner, which is ultimately determined by a public vote.

What Can I Win?

If you’re selected as a winner, your project will be included in the Only Natural capsule collection, which will be showcased at Material Matters London during London Design Festival Week in September 2026. You will also receive travel and accommodation for category winners to attend the awards event, a trophy and certificate, and global publicity across Only Natural’s print and digital platforms. Other prize elements may be announced during the entry period.

Ready to enter? Upload your entry to onlynatural.internationaldesigncomp.com by June 30 at 11:59 p.m. BST!
