i+s Editorial Submission Guidelines
The editorial team at i+s encourages the architecture and design community to contribute original, professionally written articles that are informative but not overly academic in tone (a balance between professional and conversational is ideal).
Target Audience
We serve a community of architectural and interior designers, specifiers, firm principals, and business owners across the commercial and contract design sector. Our audience is sophisticated and intelligent, and readers are familiar with a wide variety of topics related to architecture and the design of commercial interiors.
Topics of Interest
We accept articles for i+s on a rolling basis – both for the magazine and the website. So don't hesitate to reach out anytime you have a "hot topic," even if it's not specifically listed on our editorial content calendar (available for download from our marketing portal).
Topics covered in i+s may include (but are not limited to):
- Emerging design trends, principles, and market approaches
- Technology integration, materials innovation, and product trends
- Sustainability practices, circular design, resilient design, and adaptive reuse
- Career advancement, continuing education, and networking
- Project/firm management best practices, client acquisition, and retention
Content Types
- Opinion/commentary on issues relevant to interior design
- Application-specific insights
- How-to guidance
- Noteworthy interior design projects
- Thought leadership pieces
- Volunteering/pro bono work, materials/product donations, or design services for social services or non-profit organizations
Next Steps
- Draft a brief abstract or proposal on the content type, topic, and a bio for the contributor – what are their qualifications, educational/professional background, and current role?
- Confirm that the proposal is new and original content that has not been submitted to other architecture and design publications or websites.
- Email it to Editor-in-Chief Carrie Meadows. Due to the volume of editorial proposals, please allow two business days before following up.
Once editorial feedback has been received and a proposal has been accepted, please note the following:
- An accepted proposal is not a guarantee of publication. A draft must be reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief for final approval.
- Approved content may appear in print, online at iands.design, in newsletters, and/or in custom e-books.
- Contributed content is subject to editing by i+s editorial staff. The editor will work with the author/company representative to reach a mutually agreeable final version.
- We require contributors or a company representative to complete our corporate author agreement before content is published in print or online for the protection of both parties.
- Citations from reliable sources and interviews with design professionals are encouraged unless the author is a subject matter expert and can speak from experience and/or education. Attribution should be the original source. External sources should be hyperlinked and identified within the text wherever possible.
- Word counts can range from 750–1,200 words, depending on the content type.
- Accompanying photography (including photo credits) or infographics should help illustrate the concepts being explored. Acceptable image file formats include JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PSD, EPS, AI, and PDF files; minimum 1500 pixels in width at 300 dpi resolution.
- By submitting accompanying imagery, the author verifies they have permission to publish/re-publish from the photographer or graphic artist that originated the artwork.
