Surtex® Announces 2014 designext® Winners

March 2, 2014
Expert panel of judges will select one grand prize winner to be awarded a $1000 cash award.

WHITE PLAINS, NY – Representing the future of surface design, the four winners of the designext® international student competition organized annually by SURTEX®,  have been selected and will participate in the show being held May 18-20 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.

“Each year the designext participants continue to surprise us with their passion for surface design, made evident through their work. We applaud them for taking advantage of this competition, which in turn is sure to help launch a promising career in art and design,” says GLM Vice President and SURTEX Show Manager, Penny Sikalis.

The four winners are students enrolled in specialized design programs at colleges across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

•    Jenny Boucher of Toronto, a third-year student studying Material Arts & Design at Ontario College of Art & Design in Canada

•    Samantha Mast of Grand Rapids, Mich., a third-year student  in the Crafts Department with an emphasis on Textile Design at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit

 •    Tori McLean of the UK, a third-year student in Fashion & Textile Design at Winchester School of Art in Winchester

 •    Karina Rasmussen of Pleasanton, Calif., a senior in the Fashion/Textiles Design Department at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco

The 2014 competition theme was "street inspiration." Participating students were asked to submit original surface designs inspired by what they think will be "street influences" in the year 2020. Submissions had to include a collection of six surface designs for one of the following categories: wear, work, live and play. More than 70 submissions from 14 colleges and universities worldwide were received and reviewed by a panel of esteemed judges. The four winners were selected for their creativity and development of surface design, as well as the potential commercial appeal of their designs and their overall presentation.

Each student enjoys a trip to New York City to participate in SURTEX, where they will display their winning entries in a booth presentation; receive an in-depth critique of their portfolio by the judges; and gain exposure to potential industry colleagues through networking activities. Judges will select one grand prize winner who will be awarded a $1000 cash award.

The expert panel of judges consists of: Dorothy Cosonas, creative director of Knoll Textiles and Knoll Luxe; David Laubach, director of design, Avanti Press Inc; Bonnie Mackay, principal of BMackay Consulting; and Susanne Martinez, VP, Design and Product Development, SFERRA Fine Linens.
