While plenty of us may imagine cramped quarters and a sofa or two in the common areas when we think of college dorms, the development and management firm Kane Realty Corporation recently teamed with Little to design Stanhope, a mixed-use student housing community in Raleigh, N.C. The four-acre site adjacent to N.C. State University incorporates apartment-style housing with a variety of units to accommodate up to 800 students across 300 residences.
“The design of Stanhope pushes the boundaries of a typical student housing project, resulting in a truly unique and engaging environment,” explained Jennifer Resch, associate interior designer in Little’s Durham office. “Kane Realty Corporation allowed us to go beyond meeting the functional needs of students, which led to a design that incorporates amenities that support a high-tech, active lifestyle.”
Featuring a cyber café, game room, fitness center, art studio, multiple study lounges, swimming pool and sundeck, fire pit, and barbeque grills, Stanhope offers residents plenty of opportunities to destress after class while living on the historic Hillsborough Street. The modern warehouse design blends into the neighborhood with street-level retail.
Additionally, Stanhope showcases two massive art pieces: the 2-D graphic located in the fitness area, designed by N.C. State Associate Professor Patrick Fitzgerald, and the digital art found in the lobby, created by Tyler Brown, an art and design graduate candidate at the school.
