After years of traveling the globe and finding inspiration from personal vacations, business trips, work locations and more, Fil Doux Textiles debuted its newest upholstery collection, Coast to Coast, at this year’s Boutique Design New York 2018.
November's BDNY show was an ideal time for the textile company to release its recent collection, considering nearly 8,000 attendees from around the world came to New York to check out the variety of products being showcased.
Leo Novik, president of Fil Doux Textiles, says the collection unfolded organically as the team chose favorite photos from travel destinations and memorable hotels they’ve visited over the years. They then created patterns based on those personal inspirations, translating their memories from physical spaces and connecting them to the new designs.
Textiles inspired by the world
“For example, when we take clients to visit our mills, we always view the sidewalks in South America as ‘Instagrammable moments,’ so it was easy to form a connection to the physical expression of this when creating the beautiful woven pattern, Ipanema,” says Novik as an example. “Another instance of personal connection was when we saw the photos of a boutique hotel renovation in South Carolina we had worked on; every room had beautiful roses delivered nightly. A few months later, we used that inspiration for our gorgeous digital print, Charleston.”
Novik says that Coast to Coast feels like it has the widest range of color and patterns his team has every put together in a single collection. It consists of 12 patterns in over 50 colors, with each pattern encapsulating the unique attributes of its namesake location.

“Being part of the hospitality world, we see so many beautiful destinations in our travels; it’s really impossible not to find inspiration in the cities we visit,” says Novik. “Every pattern in this collection was truly inspired by something my team saw during a business trip or vacation. And with my childhood in South America, I have a deep appreciation for the beauty of our mill’s locations in Chile and Brazil, entwined with Fil Doux Textiles’ own rich history of fabric making.”
10 textiles, 12 inspiring locations
- Ipanema: Ipanema is a homage to the iconic boardwalks in Brazil. Inspiring artists and tourists from around the world, the company translated love for the beautiful destination into this design.
- Irving: In London, Irving Street mills with well-dressed, influential people in the heart of the UK’s biggest metropolitan area. Taking this into account, Fil Doux Textiles referenced men’s suiting in every step of the creation of this tailored pattern. Irving is available in five classic colors.
- Kahala: The Kahala neighborhood on Oahu, HI, is a destination known for its brilliant seaside views and a focus on wellness, located inside Hawaii’s capital city of Honolulu. The aerial view of the winding streets prompted a laid-back, intricate digital print, available in three colors that are perfect for pillow accents or show-stopping drapery.
- Marin: The coastal colors of Northern California gave life to this digital print which comes in 11 tonal combinations. The bold layered shades are mesmerizing in combination with subtle hues, the pattern hinting at the namesake region’s waterfront sunsets.
- Mendoza: A nod to the heart of Argentina’s wine country, Mendoza’s soft woven hand suggests the organic cloud patterns found flanking the countryside. The woven pattern is launched in five colors, and is available as drapery or upholstery.
- Nantucket: This chevron pattern pays homage to one of the most treasured East Coast destinations: Nantucket, MA. With its romantic sand dunes and nautical vibes, Nantucket is a mix of crisp traditional style and a relaxed seaside atmosphere.
- Olympia: Inspired by the tranquil yet mysterious fog familiar to the vast terrain of Olympia, WA, this digital ombré offers a contemporary touch to any design. The pattern is available in Indigo, Forest and Mist.
- Orleans: Iconic and recognizable with a classic comfort, Orleans is a striped pattern with a dual construction. The design exudes a subtle richness, complimented by 11 playful color options.
- Villanueva: Big, bold and bright, Villanueva makes for a grand entrance in any space. Expressive in every way possible, all six colorways pack a punch in this woven dynamo.
- Woodstock: Taking cues from both the ancient Japanese Shibori dyeing technique and the iconic American tie-dye process, Woodstock is a funky, earthy and slightly psychedelic digital print. A company favorite, the design is back in six fresh colors: Grey, Mustard, Turquoise, Indigo, Brown and Burnt Orange.
“We really have something for everyone in this collection,” Novik says. “It’s a beautiful mélange of worldly travel, with both urban and resort applications. We don’t believe in borders, and Coast to Coast really reflects the wide-open palette we’re seeing more and more in so many designs around the world. This collection can’t be boxed in.”
