The interior design industry has recently seen a whirlwind of color news, from a wide range of fresh palettes to inspiring 2020 colors of the year. Benjamin Moore now joins the news thread with the announcement of its Color of the Year 2020: First Light 2102-70 (pictured, courtesy of Benjamin Moore).

The color is described as a soft rosy hue that blooms with potential for commercial and residential interiors.

It works well with an array of colors from soft neutrals and whites to deeper colors like navy or charcoal, according to Andrea Magno, Benjamin Moore’s director of color marketing and development.

“It is an interesting color because the first reaction to pink may not be that it is highly versatile, but the value and saturation of First Light is such that it does work well with many colors and materials,” she says.

Magno says the concept for First Light was thought of in the color studio at Benjamin Moore, when the color team discussed what matters to them as individuals, and what role the home plays in everyone’s lives today and into the next decade.

“We identified a selection of words that relate to the needs we see rising in importance, such as creativity, security, beauty, authenticity and optimism,” Magno says. “The next step was to draw a connection between these words or ideas and color. The resulting palette is a blend between fresh pastels, neutrals and deeper hues, with an overall sense of softness that makes these colors very easy to use in any interior, whether residential or commercial.”

Along with First Light, the Benjamin Moore Color Trends 2020 palette features:

  • White Heron OC-57
  • Crystalline AF-485
  • Windmill Wings 2067-60
  • Buxton Blue HC-149
  • Golden Straw 2152-50
  • Thunder AF-685
  • Cushing Green HC-125
  • Oxford Gray 2128-40
  • Blue Danube 2062-30
The Color of the Year 2020 and corresponding palette aim to represent a new dawn of idealism, design and living, according to the company’s press release.

“Our expectations of our surroundings have changed, making us expect more from them while promoting wellness, imagination and comfort,” Magno adds. “Color offers us the ability to set the tone for a space, whether that color is used in a big way with a lot of impact or in a small way to add unexpected interest.”

Magno states that in years past, colors similar to First Light have been used in restaurant and hospitality design with great success, as it’s a flattering color that creates an aesthetically pleasing backdrop for other elements.

“First Light is pale enough that it doesn’t scream pink, but it gives a soft glow that makes a space welcoming, making it a great choice for healthcare environments, plus it appeals to all generations,” she says. “Likewise, the accompanying colors in the Color Trends 2020 palette are quite pleasing for commercial applications whether an accent in an office building or a backdrop at retail.”
