CHICAGO – The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and Interface are pleased to announce the winners of the IIDA Student Sustainable Design Competition. The competition celebrates students whose original interior projects demonstrate consistent, creative sustainable principles.

The 2012 first place prize was awarded to Grace Kirby, Student IIDA, Ashley Lauria, Student IIDA, and Julie Warren, of Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design, for their project, Solitaire Market. This project sought to convert the historic mercantile building in Denver, Colorado into a market dedicated to lowering energy costs and providing healthy alternatives to consumers.

The second place prize of $1,000 was awarded to Stephen Peck, Student IIDA, of Miami International University for his project Biscayne Active Youth (BAY).

The judges bestowed Special Recognition honors to the project, ECO_V designed by Abagael Warnars, Student IIDA, and Daegeon Cho, Student IIDA, of the Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta.

Finally, the People’s Choice Winner was Vitality Assisted Living Facility who garnered a total 2147 votes. Erica Riha and Ashley Olsen, of Iowa State University, received an engraved iPad gift and free IIDA Student Membership.

Projects were judged by Jean Hansen, FIIDA, HDR Architecture, Amie Keener, IIDA, Gensler and Robert Moylan, IIDA, of SmithGroupJJR.

“It is very exciting to see the vast array of projects interior design students are exposed to in their programs. There was not only a breadth of project types but many interesting sustainable concepts to evaluate, which holds promise not only for our profession but for our communities,” states Jean Hansen on behalf of the judges.

IIDA would like to extend a special thank you to Interface who generously sponsored the 2012 Student Sustainable Design competition.
