The International Interior Design Association’s New York Chapter (IIDA NY) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Student Design Awards, which celebrates students whose original interior design projects demonstrate consistent, creative principles.
Out of the 87 students who submitted design portfolios, which included a maximum of two individual projects and a stated philosophy of design, five received first place awards of $3,000 and an IIDA Student Membership. Winners include:
- Amanda Bacha, School of Visual Arts. Project: AMP Asbury Music Park. Project judge Hans Galutera noted Amanda’s project was conceptually well thought out. “The ceiling design is outstanding and provides a dramatic backdrop for the performers and the audience,” said Galutera.
- Yuanyuan Ma, New York School of Interior Design. Project: WeWood Of Yuanyuan’s WeWood Flagship Store design. Project judge Annie Lee said, “Excellent execution of the wonderful wood concept, which could easily have been too overwhelming if not done just right. Constant attention to the function of space while truly maintaining the core concept shows good design discipline.”
- Pedro Barillas, New School of Design. Project: FreeMan Hotel. “While designed for a niche clientele, FreeMan Hotel is a space everyone would enjoy visiting,” said project judge Randy Fahey. “The use and definition of space is nicely considered, and flows well. There is plenty of three-dimensional eye-candy, but it isn’t trendy or cliché—it is strong architecture.”
- Yawen Wang, School of Visual Arts. Project: Moments in the Hudson. Project judge Randy Fahey noted, “This design is wonderful in how it takes an everyday New York sight (the Hudson River) and turns it into an adventure of discovery. The spaces are interesting and have a great interplay from one to the other. I think the section through the overall site is a really exceptional drawing.”
- Kuan Chung Tao, Fashion Institute of Technology. Project: Ophthalmology Office. “From conceptual planning to execution of interior detailing, there is a consistency and thoughtfulness to the approach that is both successful in whimsy and practicality,” said project judge Hans Galutera.
Five students walked away with honorable mentions for their projects, along with a $1,000 award and an IIDA Student Membership. IIDA NY’s Annual Student Design Awards Program is open to junior, senior, and graduate students enrolled in an Interior Design course of study at an accredited New York State college or university.
