Green Building Initiative Introduces Green Globes for Sustainable Interiors

June 3, 2014

New sustainability rating system smooths path for interior designers

The Green Building Initiative (GBI) will introduce a new rating tool for interior designers and architects at the annual NeoCon commercial interior design tradeshow in Chicago: Green Globes for Sustainable Interiors.

“This system continues our development of rating tools to promote accessible, practical green building,” said GBI President Jerry Yudelson. “Gone are the unnecessary and costly prerequisites of other rating systems and the need to consider the base building characteristics. We've focused this system entirely on the interior designer's and interiors architect's scope of work."

The Green Globes system includes a survey assessment, the use of an independent assessor to work with the client throughout the project, and a strong focus on energy savings from lighting and plug or process loads. It also extensively uses Environmental Product Declarations to aid materials choices and rewards office furniture certified under the BIFMA 'Level' standard.

"We took the best ideas from our existing Green Globes for New Construction standard and married them to the specific needs of the tenant improvement project," said Yudelson. "We invite the profession to take a look at what we have and to apply it to their next tenant improvement or interior remodeling project."
