Product Expose: The SoHo Collection by MechoSystems

Jan. 4, 2016

A Q&A with the automated shading system

Where did you grow up?
In Edison, N.J., and Phoenix, Ariz. at a MechoSystems factory being cut into coverings for windows.

What was your first big break?
Being introduced in the MechoSystems booth during one of the biggest events of the year—NeoCon 2015!

What’s the rumor mill churning out about you these days?
That I’m shallow and with no depth. My detractors confuse being made of thin yarn as being thin-skinned, but they are wrong. I can cover windows and manage glare just like my thicker yarn cousins can! Plus, my control of solar radiation while maintaining a view to the outside can’t be covered up or ignored either.

Where was the last place the paparazzi photographed you?
In Chicago, at the Merchandise Mart for NeoCon 2015.

Aside from sugar, spice, and everything nice, what else are you made of?
Well, speaking formally, a mix of PVC and polyester and meeting the requirements of GreenGuard Gold. I’ve inherited traits from both of my parents—an industrial designer and textile engineer. I am considered to be part of a distinctive color family!

If you could get one plastic surgery procedure what would it be?
Augmentation of all types seems to be the current fashion and I’m no different. At only 118 inches wide, bigger is better for today’s windows. So, I wouldn’t mind adding a few inches. Is 126 inches too much to ask?

Who are some of your idols and influencers?
Easy: Mr. Joel Berman, the founder of MechoSystems. During the early years, Mecho had their corporate office in SoHo, where many innovations of rollershades were developed. Today, rollershades are used worldwide to help people be comfortable in spaces with windows—and that’s a lot of places!

What’s your biggest turn-on?
I have a lot of hang-ups, but most of them are in the frame of a window.

Turn-off?
Sometimes I feel like I am on a roller coaster. Up, down, up, down. For heaven’s sake, leave me up or automate me.

Who’s your current bestie?
It’s a toss-up between the sun and glass. Sometimes glass and I can be total frenemies, like when it gets in a tiff and decides opaque textiles is its BFF, which makes me jealous. But we always work it out since glass knows I want everyone to be able to take in the view with some privacy. With the sun, however, it’s always got my back.

Who would you like to work with next?
I want to work with you, the reader, so call MechoSystems and get a piece of me so you can order a shade for your project.

What’s the worst part about fame?
Everybody can’t take their hands off me. I’m being pulled in different directions.
