True Colors

May 5, 2016

Wait, America's favorite colors are blue, black, and gray?

We may live in the land of Red, White, and Blue, but when it comes to choosing colors for interior décor, our national flag actually looks a little more like the image at right.

According to a new study, “America’s True Colors,” by Spoonflower, the country’s favorite colors are blue, black, and gray based on data from 200,000 purchases of fabric, wallpaper, and giftwrap. Blue is the most purchased color in 41 states and over half of major U.S. cities, while black is the most popular color across five states. There are also strong regional differences in color preferences, reveals the study, conducted by Spoonflower. California and the West buy black décor most; the South likes gray; the Northeast, Midwest, and the Plains prefer blue.

The top six colors nationally are blue, black, gray, pink, white and green.

Interestingly, at the end of 2015, promotional products retailer 4imprint and international forecaster Color Marketing Group developed the industry’s first promotional bags in four of 2016’s trendiest, attention-getting colors, including Uni-Blue, Arabesque, Teal My Heart, and Cinco, which include hues of blue and gray (not surprisingly), but also shades of both bright, orange-inspired red as well as a deeper violet counterpart.

Although it may seem that earth tones are off the map, the Color Marketing Group predicts that a warmer shade of green will be predominant in 2017 and beyond. Emerging from workshop discussions at CMG North America meetings, the yellow-influenced green color, Thrive, has been determined a key color as we move forward. Take a look at this health- and nature-inspired color here, and let us know where your color preferences fall on the spectrum!
