Architectural Pavilion at Olympics

Sept. 7, 2004
Kling, headquartered in Philadelphia, Pa. and one of the nation’s leading architectural, engineering, interiors and planning firms, is pleased to announce the completion of the NBC News’ “Today” Olympic Pavilion. The 2100 SF pavilion is currently stationed in Athens, Greece where the top morning show in the nation will be broadcast.  After the Olympics, the pavilion will be disassembled, packaged and shipped to Turino, Italy, where it will be stored for use in that city during the 2008 Olympic Games.“We were thrilled to be a part of the international, time-honored event that is the Olympics and welcomed the unique design challenges the project presented,” says Leonardo Diaz, design principal, Kling. “On the one hand, the design is informed by requirements for modularity and transportability inherent in a structure that will be disassembled and reassembled a number of times around the world in very different settings and environments. It was also greatly governed by the specific technologies and flexibility required within a broadcasting studio. On the other hand, and more importantly, its simple curvilinear form arose from the desire to create an identifiable marquee for the Today Show, which evokes the Olympic spirit and transcends a single Olympic venue.”Custom-built by FCL Management, Inc. and New Jersey-based ArtGuild, the floor and walls are constructed of modular panels, with a fabric-covered, light steel frame forming the roof.  Half the perimeter wall area of the shelter is open to the exterior environment through operable glass panels, which can be closed during inclement weather or non-broadcasting periods.  The structure has three distinct sets: the interview set and the production set sandwich “Home Base,” which is positioned in the center of the pavilion.  Kling is a full service, international practice providing architecture, engineering, interiors and planning services.  Based in Philadelphia, Kling also maintains offices in Raleigh, N.C. and Washington, D.C. Through its affiliate, the Stubbins Associates, additional company locations include Cambridge, Mass. and Las Vegas, Nev.
