Healthcare Solutions Help Hospital Create Comfortable Environment

July 17, 2006

Green Bay, WI (June 21, 2006) - When Lancaster General Hospital decided to revamp the look of its facilities, it needed furniture that was appropriate for an acute care setting without the usual institutional look and feel. The Pennsylvania hospital wanted to create a healing environment that was supportive of its patients. Lancaster General eventually selected KI to provide furniture and furnishing solutions for its patient rooms and office environments.

Used throughout Lancaster General's patient rooms and waiting areas, KI's Perth® patient seating, sleepers and recliners support a variety of users—patients, visitors and staff. To provide comfort for family members who assist in patient care, the Perth sleeper sofa is located in Lancaster's patient rooms within an area that is specifically designated for visitors.

"Within the patient environment, we have invested in upgrading the look and feel of our space to encourage a positive patient, family and visitor experience," said B.J. Laird, assistant vice president, materials management, Lancaster General Hospital. "KI's Perth seating has enabled us to combine functionality, durability and attractive design to deliver an aesthetic that is calming and healing for our patients."

KI's Perth patient chairs are ergonomically designed to be easy to get in and out of while providing a high level of comfort for both patients and guests. A removable seat and back make them simple to clean and, if necessary, replace. Perth sleepers allow guests to easily convert the loveseat or lounge chair to a sleeper. They also offer convenient under-seat storage, and optional casters allow the chairs to be moved within a room or down the hall. All Perth seating is available with moisture barriers to help protect the fabric and ensure a long product life.

True® and WorkZone™ desking products, along with Balance® overhead storage, were selected for workstations. Fully adjustable Engage™ task seating and stools are standard throughout the entire hospital to ensure ergonomic comfort for staff members.

Engage features adjustable back height and seat depth, height adjustable arms with 360-degree pivoting arm caps, and an articulating back with the ability to lock it in place. In addition, a layer of "memory" foam covers the top of the chair's standard contoured foam seat, providing extra comfort and stress point relief.

"Ranging from patient rooms to waiting areas to offices, we were pleased that we could employ a single manufacturer for all of our furniture needs," said Laird. "We worked with KI because of the depth and breadth of its product lines, which allowed us to select furniture that was specific to our needs in multiple settings."
