Editorial: New Look for a New Year

By Robert Nieminen

You may have noticed something dramatically different about Interiors & Sources. This issue represents a cover-to-cover transformation that has been a long time in the making, and one that we believe will serve the needs of our readers better than ever.

Perhaps the most visible change is on the front cover. Having researched our readers' likes and dislikes, we discovered that, overwhelmingly, readers want to see more projects and product coverage from us, so we are doing away with our signature duotone portrait photography and featuring beautiful interiors in full color. Our premier project for this issue's cover is also an exclusive to I&S—the new headquarters for the Canadian fashion retailer,Bullock Associates was selected to design this hip space that reflects the client's vision and need for flexibility.

In addition to an updated look, we are also introducing several new departments and features. First up is a new department titled, "Design Collaborative," which tells the 'story behind the story' of new products that are introduced to the market and the designers who inspired them. Our first installment features the Shadowgraph Collection of fabrics from Pallas Textiles. Designed by Lori Weitzner, Shadowgraphs takes its cue from fine art cyanotype photography by Zeva Oelbaum and translates into a beautiful product inspired by nature.

In keeping with our mission to be the premier source for sustainable design coverage, we are dedicating a new department titled, EnvironDesign Notebook," to cover news, best practices and expert opinions on the critical issue of sustainability. To articulate this new editorial offering, we are pleased that Keri Luly, stewardship coordinator for Allsteel, is joining us as our monthly guest columnist. This month, managing editor Jamie Nicpon sat down with Luly to uncover her initial impressions on the state of sustainability in the A&D industry, opportunities for improvement, and the direction she believes policies and practices are heading.

Although these changes do reflect a lot of research and hard work, we still have a sense of humor about us. We've added a twist to our standard offering of new product coverage by introducing a fun feature called "Product Q&A." We decided that new products should also have a voice within these pages, so this issue, we took the opportunity to "interview" The HON Company's Park Avenue desk to find out more about its personality and where it feels most at home, among other things.

So while we have made some major changes and subtle modifications, you have our word that what will remain is our continued emphasis on the editorial content that defines who we are: a magazine focused on the people, projects and products that are advancing the profession of commercial interior design.

I am optimistic—not only for the possibilities here at Interiors & Sources—but also for the A&D industry as a whole. The industry outlook for 2007 is positive: a new report from ZweigWhite shows that the majority of firm leaders surveyed (57 percent) remain optimistic about the industry's performance in 2007 and project their business will be "outstanding" or "excellent" with healthcare and education among the hottest markets.

Perhaps more encouraging are some of the predictions about green building in 2007 from green building consultant and Greenbuild chair, Jerry Yudelson. According to Yudelson: cumulative LEED certifications under all systems will top 1,000 for the first time; cumulative LEED project registrations under all systems will approach 10,000; more than 10 additional states will adopt incentive programs or mandates for their own buildings; more than 30 additional LEED Platinum projects will be certified, tripling the number of such landmark buildings; LEED will register more than 100 non-U.S. and non-Canadian projects for the first time; and the number of LEED Accredited Professionals will grow by 15 percent or more—totaling more than 38,000 by the end of 2007.

Clearly, the future looks bright, and in many cases 'green,' for the industry. From all of us at Interiors & Sources, best wishes for a happy and rewarding new year!
