Green Newspaper Building Makes Cents
Making the new headquarters of The Columbian “green” made sense (and cents) for the newspaper’s publisher. Located in downtown Vancouver, Canada, the $30 million structure is on track to earn LEED Gold certification with features such as a ground-source heating and cooling system and occupancy sensored lighting, along with a design that maximizes natural lighting. The building is estimated to use 60-percent-less energy than a typical (nongreen) building.

Office Space Fuses Nature, History
Mazama Capital Management’s new headquarters in New York demonstrates a seamless visual pairing of historic and sustainable references. Located in the landmark Seagram Building, it layers new and unique materials including textural cast plaster panels and translucent and patterned acrylic dividing screens. A 1956 illuminated ceiling complements the client’s contemporary vision.

Architect: Materialism Stifles Green
Architect Paolo Soleri says environmentalism isn’t facing up to the main problem of modernity – rampant materialism. He points to hybrid cars as one of the offenders. Soleri, who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright, developed the idea of fusing architecture with ecology – what he terms “arcology.” He has developed two experimental communities that aim to provide a place where people can live, work, and produce most of what they need.

Bank Has Award-winning Mug
Duda/Paine Architects’ design of the First Citizens Bank in Columbia, SC, has been awarded the Marble Institute’s 2007 Pinnacle Award of Excellence for its historic, yet youthful, exterior. The bank’s prized limestone cladding and highly articulated bronze-colored mullions complement the historic Main Street setting and state capitol building.
