Spartanburg, SC - Milliken & Company has registered the Milliken Floor Covering New York showroom (875 Avenue of the Americas in the Greeley Square Building) with the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI).
"We had LEED criteria in mind when we began reviewing spaces; so the natural light and incredible views of Manhattan from the top floor were a good match," says David Caples, president of Milliken Floor Covering Division.
The company registered its showroom in the Chicago Merchandise Mart, its world headquarters in Spartanburg, and the Milliken Design Center in LaGrange, GA, with LEED earlier this year.
"The Mancini·Duffy team respects Milliken's approach and is excited to collaborate as a team member on projects whose strategic design initiative is to achieve LEED certification," notes Bill Bouchey, design principal with Mancini·Duffy. "Furthermore, it mirrors a consciousness we value and which is growing in our practice."
LEED credentials were used as criteria for selecting the project team. Team members include LEED administrators Catalyst Partners (www.catalyst-partners.com); Design Firm Q Studio (www.qexperience.com); the architect of record Mancini·Duffy (www.manciniduffy.com); and landlord's agent Sierra Realty (www.875sixth.com).
"The building ownership of the Greeley Square Building welcomes Milliken, and is excited to be participating in the LEED process," says Peter Braus, Sierra Realty executive vice president.
LEED for Commercial Interiors 2.0 was developed specifically to give power for making sustainable choices to tenants and designers, who do not always have control over whole building operations. The lighting design is an important part of meeting expectations with LEED for commercial space. The location of this space supports credits around urban density and public transportation. Other aspects of the project that may contribute LEED points include, retrofitting bathrooms, Milliken carpet with adhesive free installation, and the new HVAC system.
"There is a strong awareness for green building in New York, and while it is the first LEED project in the building, the landlord has been very open and supportive regarding the process," adds Caples.
