A/E Firms Report Referrals and Networking Lead to Recruiting Success

Nov. 13, 2007

Natick, MA - While recruiting and hiring continue to top the list of challenges architecture, engineering and environmental firm principals are facing, they've found at least one recruiting method that works: employee referrals, networking, and word-of-mouth communication.

According to ZweigWhite's newly published 2007 Recruiting & Retention Survey of Architecture, Engineering, Planning & Environmental Consulting Firms, 40 percent of firm leaders report this was the most successful method for finding job candidates in 2006.

In addition, an overwhelming 71 percent of firms reported referrals and networking supplied the best people when it came to qualifications, hiring rate, performance and retention. Firm leaders also cited their biggest reasons for success with finding and hiring staff had to do with their good work environment and the firm's name recognition and reputation, while they felt their difficulties with finding and hiring staff stemmed from a lack of qualified candidates.

The first edition of this new report, devoted exclusively to employee recruiting and staff retention topics, also shows firm leaders' opinions and experiences with advertising, employment agencies and search firms, in-house staff, and college and university recruiting programs. Data on retention tactics, including compensation and benefits strategies, firm culture, and professional growth, are also covered.
