Music Center Strikes the Right ChordWhile most buildings begin from the ground up, the University of California, San Diego's new Conrad Prebys Music Center begins from the inside out, with an emphasis on sound. An acoustical ceiling will be suspended from the building's roof with steel cables, and shock absorbers will isolate the internal structure from all external sound. The redesign of the 1938 structure calls for a 65-foot fly tower with a tiered roof or “layer cake” look, a hallmark of art-deco design.
