LAKE MARY, FL - Burke Hogue Mills & Associates (BHM) is making history with the design of Seminole County's first green, new construction building. Designed to accommodate BHM's headquarters, the office also will be the first building in the state working toward LEED Silver certification that will house an architectural and interior design firm.
"It has been the aspiration of the partners to have a building of our own for about eight years," said Bob Burke, BHM principal and chief executive officer. "And as architects, we must set the example and be leaders in the mainstream movement of sustainable design. It is paramount that we demonstrate our concern for the environment by designing our own building to a high LEED standard."
The construction is expected to be completed in the summer of 2008. The $4 million, 15,452-square-foot building was designed by BHM's Aranya Mom, principal, and features a two-story, 4,500-square-foot design studio that maximizes views and daylight. Sustainable features of the building include rainwater harvesting and re-use, solar power, below floor air, power and communication distribution, reflective roof and paving, automatic light controls, products high in recycled material content, and Thermomass R insulated exterior concrete walls.
"This building is a showcase, a showcase of our talents, a showcase of what we stand for, a showcase of what we want to promote, a showcase that we care for our people," said Mom. "It is a living, tangible classroom experience for clients, educators, staff, and associates."
Currently, BHM has two LEED Accredited Professional and another five staff members working toward accreditation. They also have just completed design of the Children's Museum of Naples which is intended to be LEED certified.
