Building Gets Green with Unique Lighting and Water Features
San Diego-based Architects | Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker used such sustainable features as high-efficiency lighting; gas absorption chillers, boilers, and water heaters; “light transfer” skylights; photovoltaic shade canopies, and more at Qualcomm’s Building W Campus in San Diego. The building recently earned LEED Gold certification and surpasses California’s energy standards by more than 15 percent.

Renovation Gives Hotel Back Its Modern Edge
Marble floors, art deco-inspired wall sconces, a gold-painted ceiling, and a dramatic chandelier are some of the unique design elements to be included in the $65 million remodeling of the New Yorker Hotel. The renovation will also include a new automatic revolving door, a new heating and air-conditioning system, and free Wi-Fi for guests.

Facility Puts Architecture and Engineering on Display
The new 80,000-square-foot Engineering and Computer Science Classroom Building being built at Florida Atlantic University will use exposed building systems to create a living laboratory where students can learn from the building’s architecture. STH Architectural Group Inc. uses precast concrete and glass in the design to give the building a contemporary feel.

Vibrant Design Re-energizes Chicago Hotel
Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback, and Associates recently received a design award for its renovation of the Hyatt O’Hare that included a new landscaping design as well as a monumental glass staircase. Stone flooring and backlit onyx walls grace the atrium space, which also features fixed seating areas for socialization and a custom-blown glass chandelier.
