SAN DIEGO - The recently renovated Spa at Rancho Bernardo Inn was voted the number one resort spa in North America in a readers' poll published in the April 2008 issue of Condé Nast Traveler. Architects | Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker provided full architectural design services for the expansion and renovation of the spa's facilities, located at 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive in San Diego, CA.
The annual poll ranks spas based on numerous criteria, including setting, services, staff, programs, and cuisine. The Spa at Rancho Bernardo Inn garnered an overall score of 91.8 out of 100, outranking all other resort spas.
The existing Spanish-style resort set the theme for the remodel of the aging, single-story spa and fitness buildings. Architects | Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker redesigned the structures to reflect a modernized style, complimenting the resort's surrounding landscape. Seven small spa garden pavilions totaling 1,000 square feet were added to accommodate the spa expansion and provide private outdoor treatment areas in the new, serene garden area.
The 3,900-square-foot spa building was completely gutted to create enhanced spa treatment rooms, a new relaxation room, a semi-private exterior relaxation area for female guests, and a private connection with the new spa garden treatment pavilions.
Designed to allow guests to embrace the soothing atmosphere, the new garden treatment pavilions are organized around a contemplative fountain located immediately adjacent to an exterior lounging area that features an inviting roman shower waterfall. The pavilion design integrates a traditional Spanish-style roof and incorporates natural stone throughout the landscape design. Large, wooden shutters make up two complete walls that connect the space to the landscaped garden and compliment the simple, natural wood casework in the interior.
The project team for Architects | Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker included Frank Ternasky as principle-in-charge and David Mann as project manager. Paul Reed, president and chief executive officer of the Rancho Bernardo Inn, provided oversight for the project.
The project consulting team included GSSI serving as structural engineer; Latitude 33 Planning and Engineering, civil engineer; ILA | Zammit Engineering, electrical engineer; Walsh Engineering, mechanical engineer; Burton & Associates, landscape architect; and Kathryn Mickel of BBGM as interior designer. Roel Construction was the general contractor.
