SAN DIEGO - Construction is under way for the Smith Consulting Architects-designed Arena Pharmaceuticals office building located at 6154 Nancy Ridge Drive in San Diego, CA. The project encompasses a five-story building accommodating approximately 75,000 square feet of new office space and is slated for completion in January 2009.
Smith Consulting Architects is providing full design services for the shell and tenant improvements of the building, which is situated adjacent to an existing building on Arena's campus. Ned Messer of Arena Pharmaceuticals is the facilities manager for the project. The facility was designed to be environmentally sensitive and to meet requirements for LEED certification by the USGBC.
Smith Consulting Architects designed the facility to be energy efficient, while providing a quality work environment for employees. Achieving this dual purpose begins with the building's outer skin, which will be composed of metal stud framing, stucco, stone cladding, and metal wall panels.
The facility's efficient design also incorporates windows with dual-pane laminated glazing on the building's perimeter to provide natural daylight. These windows also reduce the noise from nearby MCAS Miramar.
Additionally, the building features high-efficiency rooftop mechanical units and efficient lighting control systems. On-site solar panels are expected to supply a portion of the facility's energy needs. Landscape irrigation systems, dual-flush toilets and waterless urinals reduce water usage. Overall, the facility's design will exceed Title 24 Energy Standards by 30.9 percent.
