    New Raleigh Convention Center Shimmers
    The $192 million, 509,000-square-foot Raleigh Convention Center, which opened last week, features a 9,300-square-foot "shimmer wall," an art installation with more than 79,400 small aluminum plates that shimmer in the breeze. The center also includes spun columns and ballroom ceiling panels made from glass fiber reinforced plaster.

    NM College Officials Unveil New Graduation Plaza

    San Juan College will get a $1.25 million upgrade to the Learning Commons Plaza, the outdoor area where graduation ceremonies are held. Proposed changes include 1,000 more seats, a raised stage, a new sloped walkway, and the removal of an existing parking lot. The architects hope to streamline traffic with the addition of low sandstone walls.

    A new $18 million "green" Student Services Center at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, CA, includes such sustainable elements as energy-efficient insulation; dual-glazed, low-e windows; reduced window openings on south and west sides; exterior circulation where possible to minimize HVAC requirements; erosion and sediment control; low water-use plants; and reduced-water irrigation systems.

    Detroit Station Gets Green Roof
    The Detroit People Mover’s roof atop its station at Joe Louis Arena is made up of a thin layer of ground-hugging plants that protect the underlying roof structure by deflecting heat and sunlight and by channeling rainwater to drains. Its expected lifespan is 40 years.
