Iowa State University's C6 is a 10-foot-by-10-foot-by-10-foot room that surrounds users with computer-generated 3-D images projected on soft vinyl screens on all four walls, the ceiling, and the back wall, which is also the access door. When the university needed to upgrade the old technology in the facility to meet current standards, integrators had to maintain a high aspect ratio without significantly modifying the structure or expanding the facility. They used Sony projectors, which are placed in six stacks of four projectors each, outside each wall of the facility as well as above the ceiling and below the floor. A special technology blends together the images from each of the four projects onto each screen so that the whole image appears seamless and the experience is fully immersive. The system is driven by one of the world's largest workstation clusters. The project re-establishes Iowa State University as a leader in virtual reality, and contributes to the success of research projects done by ISU researchers and the military in a variety of fields.
