Milliken Recognized as Sustainability Mentor

Oct. 21, 2008

ATLANTA - The Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia recently recognized Milliken & Company's Live Oak Complex and Hillside Plant of LaGrange as Mentors of the Year. The Partnership presents this award annually to an organization for making strides toward a more sustainable Georgia by helping other companies understand the benefits of continual environmental improvement.

"Milliken & Company's Live Oak Complex and Hillside Plant worked together to mentor local medical facilities, municipalities, businesses, and organizations on the importance of pollution reduction," explains Suzanne Burnes, assistant director of the Pollution Prevention Assistance Division (P²AD) and manager of the Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia. "We look to see other organizations in Georgia follow their lead."

In addition to mentoring other businesses and organizations on pollution reduction, Milliken & Company personnel spent countless hours speaking to professional organizations and businesses to share their experiences of how to be a sustainable organization. Milliken & Company's Live Oak Complex and Hillside Plant joined the Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia in 2006 at the Gold level, the highest achievement level. The level for each business is based on initiatives already in place as well as those slated for completion during the term of Partnership.

Free and open to any business, the Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia was established by P²AD to foster environmental leadership and recognize superior environmental performance. The Partnership offers a variety of incentives, including cost savings through increased efficiencies, potential regulatory flexibility, free technical assistance and training, and access to networking and mentoring among peers, state and local officials.

The Pollution Prevention Assistance Division (P²AD) is a non-regulatory division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Since 1993, P²AD has provided free technical assistance to help organizations reduce their impact on the environment by conserving water, reducing waste, conserving energy, and more.
