Haworth Showrooms Earn LEED Gold

Oct. 14, 2008

HOLLAND, MI - Haworth Inc. recently announced that its Washington, D.C., and Dallas, Texas showrooms have received LEED® Gold certification for Commercial Interiors (CI) from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). They join Haworth showrooms in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Pune, India, that also have earned this distinction.

"Both of these Haworth showrooms are located in historic buildings anchoring revitalized business districts," explains Kurt VanderSchuur, corporate brand director. "We believe that ‘sustainability' encompasses community engagement as much as the sustainable materials we use in our showrooms. The Dallas and Washington showrooms demonstrate how we can modernize space within historic buildings while respecting their integrity."

Haworth's Washington, D.C. showroom is located within Terrell Place, a mixed-use building named for civil rights leader Mary Church Terrell. Haworth earned LEED points for strategies that included retrofitting plumbing fixtures to increase water efficiency; specifying regional materials; diverting more than three-quarters of on-site construction waste from landfill; and employing multiple measures to improve indoor air quality.

The Dallas showroom is situated in Republic Center, the tallest building west of the Mississippi when it opened in 1954. Here, Haworth leveraged access to public transit, improved water efficiencies, abundant natural light, and the purchase of renewable energy credits to help earn LEED-CI Gold certification.

Both showrooms also earned LEED points for Haworth products that include significant recycled and recyclable content.

"At Haworth, we're always looking for green strategies with multiple impacts," notes project manager Mitch Boucher, LEED AP. "We worked closely with the owners of both buildings to manage construction waste effectively, specify energy-efficient appliances and contribute to the continued rejuvenation of the surrounding neighborhoods."

Haworth has committed to extending its LEED practices beyond major North American cities to including European, Asian and South American markets; new showrooms serving smaller markets likewise will implement LEED and/or equivalent practices during design and construction phases.
