HBG Sponsors Design Competition

March 13, 2009

Hnedak Bobo Group (HBG) continues its commitment to architecture education with the recently established Hnedak Bobo Group Global Design Award at the University of Tennessee’s College of Architecture and Design.

The design-oriented rather than need-based scholarship program will award $5,000 to a rising fifth-year architecture student or team of students who participate in one of the college’s approved international programs, and will recognize architecture students for exceptional work completed during their study aboard program. Students must submit their work in an established format, which will be judged by a jury comprised of HBG and College of Architecture officials. The winner will be announced each year during the fall semester.

“We are very pleased to establish this partnership with HBG, and to receive their generous sponsorship of this international studies award,” says John McRae, FAIA, Dean of UT’s College of Architecture and Design. “The foreign studies area is a key priority for our college campaign. This support will make a significant difference in delivering a quality program for our students.”

“It is imperative for architects to understand and appreciate the international marketplace,” says Greg Hnedak, FAIA, one of HBG’s founding partners and a member of the college’s board of advisors. “This design competition rewards students for work done as part of their international studies program. It recognizes the investment they have made not only to good design, but to gaining a greater appreciation of architecture in other countries as well as to the role that architects play in shaping the world’s built environment.”

Hnedak Bobo Group has supported architectural programs at multiple universities since the firm’s founding. The Global Design Award at UT is similar to an award that HBG established at the University of Arkansas’ School of Architecture in 2007. Hnedak notes that the firm employs a number of graduates from both universities on its staff, and that both institutions have a strong tradition of providing architectural education of the highest caliber.

“Through our financial investments, mentoring programs and participation in design reviews at various architecture schools, we continually illustrate our commitment to the future of the architectural profession,” notes Hnedak.
