Highmark Receives GREENGUARD Certification

June 30, 2009

HUNGTINGTON BEACH, CA – Highmark, a Southern California-based manufacturer of office seating, has been awarded GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification.

GREENGUARD certification is awarded by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI), a third-party, nonprofit organization committed to improving indoor air quality. It was established in 2001 to create a true third-party product certification program based on proven emissions standards and to provide specifying and procurement professionals with a resource for low-emitting products.

"The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute applauds Highmark on its commitment to furthering our mission of improving indoor air quality,” says Dr. Marilyn Black, founder of GEI. "Products such as Highmark’s ergonomic chairs are certified by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute to ensure consumers they are choosing the best products for indoor air quality."

Highmark undertook the process of achieving GREENGUARD certification earlier this year to support its mission of creating intuitive, clean, affordable, and green designs. The intensive process can take up to 12 months to complete and includes technical and manufacturing reviews as well as testing for more than 12,000 volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Ongoing verification is required to maintain certification.

About GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI)
Founded in 2001, GEI is an industry-independent, nonprofit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification ProgramSM. The Institute’s mission is to protect human health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air people breathe. As an ANSI-Accredited Standards Developer, GEI establishes acceptable indoor air standards for building materials, interior products, electronic equipment, indoor environments and buildings. The more than 200,000 GREENGUARD-certified products must meet stringent; third-party standards for low chemical emissions based on established health standards and undergo rigorous testing and verification processes on a regular basis. GREENGUARD certification is broadly recognized and accepted by a number of “green” building programs, including the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED® program.
