Ceramic Tiles of Italy Design Competition: Call for Entries

Dec. 18, 2009

The Italian Trade Commission and Confindustria Ceramica, the association comprised of more than 200 manufacturers of Italian ceramic tiles, recently announced the 2010 Ceramic Tiles of Italy Design Competition.

The contest, now in its 17th year, recognizes the exceptional work of North American architects and designers who feature Italian ceramic tiles in their institutional, residential or commercial/hospitality spaces. When forward-thinking designers feature products from the leading manufacturers of Italian ceramic tile in their creations, the results are bound to be noteworthy.

For the 2010 edition, architects and interior designers based in North America are invited to submit domestic and international new construction and renovation projects completed between January 2005 and January 2010. A panel of design experts will judge the projects based on their creativity, functionality and aesthetic appeal. The official criterion for the jury includes: overall design of the project; innovative use of tile; tile design; quality of installation; degree that tile enhances the setting; and the project’s sustainable attributes.

Award recipients will be announced at the Ceramic Tiles of Italy Press Conference during Coverings, which will be held in Orlando, FL, from April 27-30, 2010. In addition, an exhibit of the winning projects will be on display in the Italian pavilion during this internationally acclaimed tile and stone trade show.

Winners in each category will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and a five-day trip to Bologna, Italy, to attend CERSAIE 2010—the world’s largest exhibition for ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings—joining a delegation of top consumer and design journalists.

To recognize the contributions of the contractors and distributors involved in the winning works, Ceramic Tiles of Italy will award an additional $1,000 to be shared by the team; as the association understands that it is these valued partnerships that help bring all the pieces of the project together.

And finally, whoever said it’s not easy being green? After last year’s successful trial run, the 2010 submission process will be completely digitalized. Applications are available on the competition’s official Web site: www.tilecompetition.com. Simply fill in the required fields, provide a detailed description and upload high-resolution images of the project. It’s as easy as 1-2-3!

Submissions must be completed no later than February 19, 2010.
