As a PVC alternative, the product’s many sustainable
attributes include: high recycled content, reduced
toxicity compared to virgin PVC in upstream processing,
and no phthalate plasticizers, halogenated flame retardants or antimicrobial treatments. Additionally, it is recyclable into flooring; has a take-back program; uses less energy to manufacture due to reduced
processing performed at low temperatures; keeps PVB film from being landfilled; and carbon foot printing is conducted by a neutral third party.
The judges noted that Tandus “has embraced sustainable practices as a way to do business, including a conscious effort to use alternatives to fossil fuel-based energy sources,” and that third-party certification is a critically important sustainable affirmation.
Schoessler Lynn points out that the manufacturer “has demonstrated a reduced ecological footprint in their manufacturing process of their new collection, Landscape Patterns. They continue to look for alternative fuel sources to power their factories and it is encouraging to see continued improvements in water efficiency and reduced generation of waste.”
