ASID Supports Legislation that Opens Doors for Interior Designers in Florida

WASHINGTON – The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) continues to support legislation in Florida that allows those who have met education and examination qualifications to use the title “registered” or “certified” interior designer, while preserving the current scope of practice for those who choose not to seek registration.

This legislation benefits interior designers in many ways:

• All “certified” interior designers have the ability to expand their practice, if and when they decide that registration is the next step for them.
• Certified designers have opportunity for ownership stake, filling officer seats at firms, and sitting on the board of directors of a firm offering design professional services.
• Certified designers have the ability to go directly to a building official and submit plans for a permit.
• The legislation paves the way for interior designers to compete for state contracts, many of which are only available to state-recognized design professionals.

ASID continues to work to guarantee the rights of all interior designers to continue practicing to the fullest extent of their capabilities. In an effort to widely communicate its support, ASID has produced a video featuring ASID members Grant Gribble, ASID, and Janice Young, FASID. Both members have benefited from ASID supported legislation in Florida and share their story in the video, which can be viewed here.

The legislation in Florida not only benefits interior designers, but consumers as well. Since certified designers no longer need to contract outside staff to draft, stamp and seal drawings, the consumer saves on those additional costs.
