Project Spotlight: Cincinnati Children’s Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute

Jan. 29, 2015

The facilities present a welcoming, calming, and uplifting environment for patients and families

The Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute (CBDI) clinics, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, were designed to present a welcoming, calming, and uplifting patient and family-centered environment. Designed by Kolar Design, the objective was to provide a related, but distinct experience for both pediatric and adolescent/adult patients within two nearby clinic settings.

The overall theme for the pediatric clinic was inspired by Katie’s Kingdom, a beloved jungle scene preserved from the previous clinic. The mural had been painted in the early 2000s by Pam Kravetz as a memorial honoring a young cancer patient (Katie) who loved animals and the outdoors. The mural was recreated in the pediatric waiting area and throughout the clinic, with colorful animal artwork enlivening the corridors and exam rooms.

The nature-inspired theme was continued within the adolescent/adult clinic. Each exam room entrance has leaves inscribed with a word selected by patient’s families to provide an uplifting message.
