Designers to Watch

Jan. 29, 2016

For years, you’ve told us about the best and brightest around, so now we’re returning the favor. Every month we’ll let you know of the up-and-comers still burning the midnight oil in design schools around the globe, or who have recently made their way into the professional world. This month we’re highlighting four students who attended the Southern California Institute of Architecture's (SCI-Arc) graduate program, nominated by Graduate Program Chair Elena Manferdini.

Shawn Rasseck is a designer born in Canada and based in Los Angeles. He attended the Southern California Institute of Architecture where he received his master’s degree and graduated with honors in 2015. He was awarded Runner-Up Best Thesis for his final project, which showed a rare balance between formal aesthetic and raw talent. He brings to the profession a deep understanding of architecture along with the determination that the field requires to complete a project. He is now working as lead designer at Atelier Manferdini.

Leonora Bustamante is a designer who was born in Costa Rica and is based in Los Angeles. She graduated with distinction from the M.Arch II program at the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Her graduate thesis “Captive Objects” explores the effects of reflections and interactions generated by glazed facades and simulates the way people interact through social media. Leonora will excel in the field of architecture because she has a rare combination of talent and intellectual sophistication. She is now working at Gensler.

asli tusavul was born in Istanbul and now works in Los Angeles. She recently graduated and her thesis explores new ways to perceive the city. Her work considers the narratives of different realities, figures, and colors. She is currently working as designer at Frederick Fisher and Partners Architects in Santa Monica, Calif. In addition, her SCI-Arc thesis was exhibited at Art Share LA’s Module Exhibition in Downtown Arts District from January 6-16.

andrew adzemovic holds a master of architecture degree from SCI-Arc, where his 2015 thesis won the Graduate Merit Award. His work always challenges the notion of norm. His verbal and intellectual skills are excellent, as well as his visual and graphic expression. He is currently completing an internship for Zago Architecture and he is an assistant teacher at his alma mater.
