The Stanford Center on Longevity recently selected an innovative concept from a team of design students at San Francisco State University (SFSU) as a finalist in the Mobility category of the 2015-2016 Stanford Design Challenge. Designed by the student group of Brandon Lopez, Eric Renard, and and Hayden Roberts, the “City Cart” hybrid shopping cart is designed to help users with mobility issues safely and easily make shopping trips.

Team leader Brandon Lopez Lopez credits the inspiration for City Cart to Dr. June Fisher, who offered guidance on the design: “June loves to visit her local farmers’ market and shop for produce, but her current mobility doesn’t allow her to comfortably do so without help,” says Lopez. “We wanted to design a product that would allow June to take the walk to the farmers market, fill up her basket with everything she needs, and return home without assistance from anyone else.”

The SFSU finalists are amongst an elite group of 12 international finalists from around the globe, including teams from UC Berkeley and Stanford. This year's challenge reflects the Center's mission to help people reach old age mentally sharp and physically fit.

The Stanford Center on Longevity Design Challenge offers cash prizes and free entrepreneur mentorship in a competition open to all university students around the world who want to design products and services which optimize long life for us all. This year’s challenge consists of three categories: Mind, Mobility, and Financial Security. Each of these tracks will have its own expert judges, award up to $17,000 in total cash prizes, and offer sponsored travel to Stanford, where finalists will present their designs to renowned industry, academic, and government leaders.
