Knoll’s FK Chair Turns 50

Aug. 28, 2017

The FK Chair, conceptualized by interior designers Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm for Walter Knoll, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Designed in 1967, when bucket chairs were becoming increasingly popular, the FK has since become a design classic. With a unique form that has clear contours and perfect lines, the bucket seat and three-star base offer the ultimate combination of comfort and practicality.

Fabricius and Kastholm devoted themselves to enhancing materials, shape, and ergonomics. In 1961, they founded a studio together that became a birthplace of a number of iconic designs in furnishing history. Their mission was to clearly state the function of an aesthetic form, and this principle led to permanent symbols of the modern age. In 1969, the FK Chair was awarded the first federal style prize for “Gute Form” (Good Shape) and became an icon of minimalism in design.

Today, the FK is also available with five legs on castors. The lounge version of the chair has a lower seating height, inviting the user to read, dream, and relax. As stated on the Walter Knoll website, “The Devil Wears Prada ... and sits on FK. Like Meryl Streep on the screen, aficionados worldwide worship its unmistakable appearance: FK—the unique form, the clear contours, the perfect lines.” The bucket seat represents minimalism, and whether in its original form covered in leather with an outer synthetic shell, or as the FK Lounge with a lower seat, it is an enduring classic in the design world.
