It’s been a long time coming, but Interiors & Sources and Gresham, Smith and Partners have finally narrowed the entries down to three amazing stand-out students in the I Like Design 2012 Internship contest. From California, to Ohio, to Virginia, we heard from many talented future design stars, and we thank each and every one of you for your submissions.
Last year I&S and GS&P asked current interior design and architecture undergraduate and graduate students to design a community health and wellness center that included a clinic and community center. The facility would be located in Nashville, Tenn. and serve all members of the community and provide a place to receive medical treatment as well as wellness and life skill education. And the three students you will soon meet were those who GS&P felt most closely and creatively addressed the submission requirements with their innovative plans and designs.

So let us introduce you to Cassie Welch, Danielle Sapp and Ricardo Hernandez-Perez. Soon, their designs for the community wellness center will be posted on www.interiorsandsources.com and you’ll be able to vote for your favorite. You can vote as often as you like, as many times as you wish. One student will be knocked out of the competition at the end of two two week voting cycles. Voting begins Feb. 13 at noon. The student with the least amount of votes by Feb. 27 will be removed and a final winner will be announced on March 12 at 1 p.m. EST (voting will close at noon).
The winner will receive a paid internship with GS&P for this coming summer, as well as PAID housing costs for their time in the GS&P summer internship program.
But for today, here’s just a little glimpse into who they are.
Stay tuned for further updates!
Meet…
Cassie Welch
Cassie will graduate this year from the Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Tex. with a degree in Interior Design.
She entered the ILD competition in order to challenge herself and develop her design skills even further.
“With this project being a multipurpose commercial-type facility, I am seeking to broaden my skills and knowledge within the design field,” she says.
Her design for the GS&P-proposed community health and wellness center focuses on resident’s needs. Utilizing easy wayfinding features, lots of natural lighting and sustainable materials, her design elements promote ease of patient orientation, minimizing feelings of anxiety and nervousness.
Danielle Sapp
Danielle graduates this year from The Art Institute of Tampa with a degree in Interior Design. The GSP-proposed community health and wellness center was the first healthcare facility she designed.
“Through having a strong foundation in evidence-based design, I have a sincere desire to pursue a career in the design of healthcare environments,” she says.
Danielle’s concept incorporates the “three irreducible tenets of sustainability, known as the Triple Bottom Line (TBL),” incorporating economic prosperity, environmental quality and social justice. Gardens and water features serve as great focal points for patients and present a strong, organized design. Her project also proposes a partnership with the Nashville Livability Project, in order to prepare Nashville for the baby boomer wave.
Ricardo Hernandez- Perez
Ricardo will graduate in 2013 from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond with a degree in Interior Design.
He hopes to come out on top in the I Like Design competition because “it would be an honor to intern for a firm like Gresham, Smith and Partners."
Ricardo used the “placid spatial plane that exists between the top of the trees and the clouds” as his inspiration to create a space that reminds patients of home, but also implemented a floor plan that resembles a shopping center. The food services elements also go further by teaching cooking classes on healthy eating and hosting farmers’ market events.
