The design supports the newly built school’s pedagogical methods and its emphasis on offering students and teachers diverse environments. Instead of rigid lines of immovable desks and hard chairs, this open learning space offers a mix of independent workstations, tables and collaborative zones. Carpeted steps and risers, nooks cut into walls and partitions, comfortable lounge chairs and fluid table shapes invite children and teachers to relax in the space and seek out the best niche for the activity at hand.

Flexibility and adaptability is infused into every corner of the school’s floor plan. Teachers can provide information to large groups and then let students work on assignments independently or in small groups. With only a handful of traditional classrooms, Vittra School Brotorp is largely composed of custom-designed sections to support three age groups, as well as a library and podium area.

A common room for kindergarten-aged children offers a unique structure with recessed pockets. Built to the children’s height, this feature encourages students to play and explore, yet doesn’t obstructure an adult’s ability to supervise the entire room.
