Concept Statement:
The Belay Hotel combines outdoor recreation with an elegance similar to Moab’s beautiful rock formations. An eclectic mix combines nature with modern forms. The word “belay” means the securing of a person or a safety rope to an anchor point (as during mountain climbing). This hotel and its name will bring safety from the hot weather and relaxation from a long day of adventures. For the convenience of the customers, an outdoor sporting shop will be provided with an indoor rock climbing wall, repair bike shop, and outdoor recreational products. To bring the Belay hotel Moab’s history and beauty, specialty nana doors are placed in the restaurant area, which open up to the courtyard gardens and entertainment stage. Whether opened or closed, the nana doors present Moab’s scenery at its best. To showcase this beauty, Moab’s historical petroglyphs become the base of the Belay hotel design. The spiral is a distinct shape in these petroglyphs. Spirals symbolize nature. Nature isn’t stagnate but always changing, progressing, and developing. These same elements are shown in the Belay hotel by the natural wood flooring, organic wall, lighting, furniture applications and spiral staircase. Another element brought into the Belay hotel design is water and its rippling affect. To bring out this aspect unique fountains are displayed in various areas of the space. They bring movement and a calming sound to the atmosphere. The colors displayed in the space are warm reds and oranges which are mixed with blues and natural greens. This active and one-with-nature hotel will emulate the aspects of why so many people return time and time again to the beautiful town of Moab.
