U4 4^th Surface Technology by AGC Flat Glass North America is designed to greatly improve the performance and energy-efficiency of double glazed window units without the need to add additional glass panes.

U4 4^th Surface Technology utilizes a pyrolytic low-E hard coating that can be installed on the fourth surface of an insulated glass unit.

This allows manufacturers to use two low-E coatings in a single double-glazed unit, resulting in an R5-rated glass package.

U4 4^th Surface Technology is able to reflect energy to the inside as well as the outside, which improves the insulating properties of the U4 by 15% to 20% over conventional IGUs.

The manufacturing cost of triple glazed IGUs is 50% to 60% more than the cost of adding U4 technology to a double-glazed window.
