The carpet industry has long been considered an early adopter of sustainable practices within the A&D community, and its leadership continues with this year's winner in the Flooring category, Milliken. With its Sound and Fury Collection, Milliken won the judges over with a product that "illustrates its commitment to both superior products and the environment," and incorporates a robust Life Cycle Analysis.

Sound and Fury uses Aquafil Econyl 75 yarn, a high-performance fiber with 70 percent recycled content, offering strength and a life-cycle comparable to fibers crafted from 100 percent virgin polymer. The yarn is constructed from 65 percent post-industrial and 5 percent post-consumer content, reducing resource consumption and waste.

Sound and Fury is PVC-free and may contribute to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and other green building certifications. Content by total product weight is 43 percent pre-consumer and 1 percent post-consumer. All of Milliken's carpets meet the criteria for Green Label Plus certification for carpet and adhesives, a program that sets scientifically based standards for indoor air quality to ensure that customers are purchasing low-emitting products. The total recycled content of a Sound and Fury tile is 44 percent and it is certified carbon neutral to the LEO-5000 standard. Additional product certifications include the NSF®140 and SMaRT® Consensus Sustainable Product Standard Platinum.

In terms of manufacturing, conventional energy sources like oil, coal and natural gas are being replaced by greener sources like wind, solar and water. Milliken uses renewable energy to meet its needs, including methane and hydropower; the company currently pipes more than 80 percent of the methane harvested from landfills in Georgia to its manufacturing facility.

Concerned about carpet ending up in a landfill after its useful life? Not with Milliken. Since 1999, the company has sent zero waste to landfill from its LaGrange carpet manufacturing facilities. Furthermore, Milliken designs its carpet with a commitment to providing end-of-life alternatives: all of its carpet can be renewed, reused or recycled, and the company offers a No Carpet to Landfill Pledge. Its Renaissance Sample Return program offers customers the option of returning used samples to the company as well. And that's something all specifiers can feel good about.
